Over the weekend we hosted our first ever mini garage sale. We called it a mini sale because it ended up being the result of some spring cleaning that we did last week and we honestly don’t accumulate a lot of things. Rather than collecting dust we thought that others may have use for our seldom used items, including plain white dishes, photo frames, silverware, folding chairs, Jon’s guitar equipment etc. Neither of us had ever hosted a sale so we did not know what to expect. Along with the Yard Sale Queen’s advice and our novice experience, I thought I’d share some tips in case you feel like cleaning out your closets and hosting your own sale this summer:
- Advertise it for free on Craigslist and include directions to your house.
- If you have time, put a price tag on everything (I used these green dots) because it will make it easier than answering ten questions at once.
- Expect early birds, meaning that they will have no problems rummaging through your things at 7am when you are still setting up. I actually didn’t mind it because we benefited from some early sales but I can see how it could get frustrating.
- Get some change from the bank the day before your sale (15 x $1, 7 x $5, 3 x $10, 1 x $20).
- Have a portable stereo by your side playing some easy listening music.
- Place your items on tables with table cloths. Good presentation makes everything look more appealing.
- Have signs with arrows directing your potential customers to your house from the closest main street. We placed five signs that we made out of neon yellow cardboard reinforced with another layer of cardboard (from our old boxes) and staple gunned to wooden stakes from Home Depot. They weren’t exactly classy but you could see them from far away, which we believed was quite important.
If you are in the spring cleaning mode, then perhaps you’ll be inspired to have a garage sale of your own. It’s a good feeling to be clutter-free.

Spam prevention is also an important feature you should expect from your host.
Now that you have found the options you are looking for it is time to look for a host.
Wow! There are so many. A simple search for the term web host will produce thousands of results. So who do you choose?
A web host should always be available in case you need assistance. At the least they should have a help desk and faq area in case you have questions. If possible a phone number is also helpful. They should also provide a fast server so your website is instantly visible and not slow to view. In addition they should provide no or very little downtime. This is when your website is not visible at all. Finally your files should be in a secure environment. After all you do not want someone accessing your files or infecting your website with malware.
To conclude they are many web hosting options and hosts. It is important to do your homework to find the best one for your website.
