Peering into the brownstones

April 8th, 2009 · 15 Comments

We’re back from a last minute trip to New York. My mother is visiting us from Sydney at the moment and after only just recovering from jet lag she was ready for a little adventure. We decided to take advantage of the travel deals (check Travelocity if you have itchy feet this weekend — you’ll be surprised by where your budget can take you these days) and found ourselves boarding a plane headed toward the Big Apple a mere 24 hours later. There are many things to love about New York but my favorite of all were the brownstones…

Brownstones of the Upper West Side

Our taxi driver took us through the Upper West Side on our way to the flea markets in Chelsea. And that’s when we noticed the row after row of brownstones along the side streets. So of course I had to drag my mum back the next day to see these beauties up close and personal, even in the pouring rain. Any brownstones with black doors and ivy completely won me over.

After getting lost trying to find our subway stop, we finally made it over to Brooklyn that afternoon. As we emerged from the station we were greeted with brownstones in all directions. Each home seemed to tell its own story and I only wish we could have stayed longer to find out more. I probably would not have gone knocking on doors but you never know who you’ll run into, right? :)

Upon returning to Houston today my real-estalker tendencies led me in a search of who lives in these historical homes. I found the perfect fix: the aptly named blog feature called Brownstone Voyeur of Casa Cara and Only The Blog Knows Brooklyn, which reveals the stories of brownstone dwellers in Brooklyn every Thursday. Here are some of the homes that they have featured so far…

The icing on the cake is definitely the backyard garden above. Do you agree?
