Since the fall of Domino, I feel like the remaining shelter magazines have stepped it up or maybe I am just paying more attention to them now. Traditional Home has an excellent feature about Michelle Smith, owner and designer of the clothing line called Milly. Yesterday I wanted to live in Fiona Barratt’s apartment and now I know I would be a happy young lady with Michelle Smith’s studio space as my office away from home. Her work area is just as beautiful as Michelle herself.

The loft is located in Manhattan’s Garment District, with large windows and sparse furniture creating a light and airy space. The white walls, lucite chairs, orb chandelier, and a few upholstered pieces are a lovely combination, where the garments and fabrics become the stars. Natural light is an important element in any space for me. In my home office, I sit right in front of a large window that overlooks our street. Even though I am not gazing through the windows of other legendary fashion designers in the streets of Manhattan, I find the natural light really uplifting. Perhaps this is why Michelle selected this particular light-filled loft space for her showroom. Q: And now what comes out of her inspirational space?

A: These gorgeous and vibrant boho-chic pieces from her 2009 Cabana and Spring collections. They make me want to grab a sunhat, a pair of sunglasses, and hop on a plane to get out of this dreary weather. My fellow Houstonians, where did the sunshine go?

Oh my gosh, I just saw this article the other day. Isn’t her studio gorgeous? I love it! Her line makes me want to head for somewhere sunny, warm, and fabulous. Great post!

Wow! Beautiful. I think windows are so important in a room. Especially an office/studio. I love all the natural light coming in. Where my home office is now I only have 2 windows and I get a whole lot of light. I’m moving my office to our sunroom and can’t wait to be in with all the windows and sunshine.

I saw this too and thought the space was amazing and the clothes look great. Also, did you see the pull-out about new and upcoming young designers? It was pretty interesting.

hey milly,
i just love your collection…
I am Shraddha Jain and looking for an internship in fashion design. I have a Diploma degree (one year full-time course) in Fashion Design from ‘B D Somani Institute of Art & Fashion, Mumbai’ and a Bachelors degree in Commerce. The last one year since the time I arrive in the US in July 08, I have been taking courses in fashion styling and image consulting at FIT & fashion design courses at Parsons to further my education in Fashion.
While in India, I had designed my own line of Indian and western women apparel and have held numerous exhibitions where they were sold and praised. My primary interest in fashion lies in designing apparels and related accessories for women. I enjoy mixing techniques and fabrics in order to create inspiring and unique garments. For instance, in the annual fashion show at B D Somani, the Indian saree designed by me was such that it could also be worn as a one piece western gown. I like to focus more on fits, cuts and styles in a manner that they impart elegance to simple designs. Indo-western fusions and western designs/styles inspire me the most.
I am in New York for the summers / fall (can be extended) and am really very keen to work with you as an intern and/or for the fashion week. Kindly find attached my resume and some of my designs can be found at www.shraddhajain.com. I can also get sample garments designed by me for your review. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Shraddha
