Afternoon tea

March 4th, 2009 · 28 Comments

It’s almost afternoon tea time — one of my favorite parts of the day. Many people survive throughout the day with coffee. Although I enjoy the taste and smell, coffee makes me thirsty so it is always tea for me. Plus I grew up drinking tea in Australia, even before going to bed. These days I wake up to cup in the morning, then have another around 3:30pm, and finally share a cup with my husband when he returns from work. If the weather is pleasant, we sit in the backyard sipping our tea and chat about our day. Ha, we sound like old fuddy-duddies…

Morgan Harrison Dining Room

Now this dining room designed by Morgan Harrison looks like a perfect spot for afternoon tea. It’s a beautiful mix of formal and country elements such as the farmhouse table, antique silver urn, gilded mirror, chandelier, and turquoise painted sideboard. There are many rooms to love in her portfolio but the dining room speaks to me, mainly due to the turquoise in the color palette (and the fresh hydrangeas certainly do not hurt). To recreate this look, I searched on e-bay for some similar items that you could use in your own home…

Morgan Harrison Dining Room

Source: 1. painted sideboard (needs a fresh coat of glossy turquoise paint); 2. gilded mirror (wait to find a slightly larger version); 3. silver plated urns; 4. Italian painted dining chairs (these would be a splurge but try finding wooden chairs and painting them yourself); 5. oak farmhouse dining table; & 6. hydrangeas from your local florist.

Eddie Ross TeaThis afternoon tea post was not only inspired by Morgan Harrison’s exquisite room but also the tea table setting by Eddie Ross. He believes that it’s all in the details and I couldn’t agree more. Imagine having your girlfriends over for afternoon tea at an elegant yet unfussy table set similar to this one. Luckily Eddie now sells some of his fabulous wares in his Etsy store so that we no longer have to dream. Eddie suggests mixing and matching tea cups and saucers rather than using a set. It not only lends itself to a more interesting table scape but also each piece is then really special because you can collect your cups and saucers along the way. I bet my sister will LOVE this idea — thanks, Eddie!

Kylie, you are SO adorable with your tea! I LOVE afternoon tea too, it’s such an English/English colony thing! I got totally into it in NZ, morning tea, afternoon tea, tea after dinner, tea for my inlaws! I never knew how making a pot of tea had such a science to it too! My husband just bought my parents their first jug ever, he was like, how on earth have they even LIVED with out a jug their whole lives. Now they use it all the time! You’ve just inspired me too, to make a nice “cuppa”!

This is just the loveliest post, Kylie! The images are gorgeous and I love the ritual of afternoon tea, though truth be told, I don’t do it very often.

Yes you’re right Kylie, I do love this post. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is fill up my electric kettle and turn it on. I’ve started to get into the habit of setting the timer like Jon does so that my tea is not too weak or too strong. I went through this ritual, sat down at my computer to read your blog, and there it was…a post about tea :-) . I used to not like the idea of different tea cups but it’s grown on me, especially if the tea cup patterns complement each other. That way you don’t have to worry if a tea cup breaks either since you won’t have to find the exact replacement. Loved the post!

Oh, beautiful post! I adore tea in the afternoon and right before bed. I can’t quite give up the coffee first ting in the morning. But there is something so soothing about drinking tea that I cannot resist! That room would be the perfect place for it. Love that you and your husband enjoy a post work sip–not fuddy duddy at all!
