Upgraded grey kitchen

You may recall my admiration for the open shelves in Ina Garten’s (Barefoot Contessa) New York kitchen. Well, here is a new kitchen to love. This beauty comes from the renovation duo of Anne Turner and her husband where they upgraded many spec grade features to beautiful subway tile, pendants from Restoration Hardware, butcher block and granite countertop, and a row of open shelving just beneath the cabinets. They transformed an everyday kitchen seen in most spec houses (like ours) and really made it their own.

We’re hunting for houses in a very particular (and pretty) area of Houston. Every now and then a house comes on the market that is just within our budget but they usually require a bit of work in the kitchen and bathrooms. So this gem is going in my inspiration file just in case. We’ve offered on THREE houses so far and haven’t had any luck yet. I thought, “third time’s a charm” but keep your fingers crossed that maybe we’ll be lucky on the fourth offer. I get way too emotional!

Check out the amazing before and after’s of this kitchen on Urban Grace, including the source of many of the items. And while you are over there, make sure you click through Erika Powell’s portfolio. Now this interior designer kicks it up ten notches with her amazing work (did you see the French wet bar she is installing now?).

Chocolate LoversFinally, if you are thinking about what to cook for Valentine’s Day, then consider adding Barefoot Contessa’s Deeply Chocolate Gelato to the menu. My husband made this on Sunday night and it’s oh so rich but incredibly good. I gave Jon five stars! Be prepared with a tall glass of water nearby because you will definitely need it. It reminds me of the time when I studied in Perugia, Italy, for six months and somehow figured a scoop of gelato into my daily budget. The mounds of creamy gelato were too tempting as I walked home from class each day. At least I walked, right?
