If a genie granted me a wish to repeat any day it would certainly be our wedding. Even though I no longer subscribe to Martha Stewart Weddings or Real Weddings, I still enjoy flipping through the magazines from time to time or browsing through slideshows of the latest gowns. Costume designer Karen Patch worked closely with Vera Wang to design two Vera Wang custom wedding gowns for Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway in Bride Wars. Kate’s dress was in fact based on a gown from Vera Wang’s 2009 collection but with a few changes including, “different fabric and more layers of bobbinette. It was so big she could barely fit going down the aisle.” (Read the interview here)
Anne Hathaway’s dress was supposed to be passed down from her mother, so there had to be a sense of nostalgia in the design. There is speculation over on Wedding Bells Blog that Anne’s dress was based on a gown from Vera Wang’s fall 2005 collection. Of the two designs, I prefer Anne’s more subdued and form fitting version.
And since I am a hopeless romantic, I could not help but drift into la la land as I saw these editorial photographs on Vera Wang’s site. Just beautiful…

i love all those dresses! Karen Patch also designed that yellow dress Kate Hudson wears in How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days and her wedding dress in You, Me and Dupree - both of which I loved. I have a feeling this movie is going to be kind of bad but I want to see it for all the beautiful wedding stuff!!! xoxo

Just watched the movie and LOVED IT! Definitely worth watching, dresses were beautiful. I prefered Kate Hudson’s dress a bit more, loved the poofy bottom.

Anne’s is a vera wang. I wore the dress it was based on at my wedding. It was a little different in the movie and I took the cap sleeves off.

Personally, I felt Anne’s gown was more elegant and the better looking of the two.
But then Kate’s gown is more flattering on my body type. Slim hipped ladies look great with Anne’s gown but I’m more Kim Kardashian/ Jennifer Love Hewitt than Anne Hathaway so by default I get the strapless ball gown. Which actually isn’t bad at all save for the $25,000 price tag. OUCH!!!!

I bought the dress Kate’s is based on .. I think there’s a picture of it on the net somewhere with a brown sash! The only differences really are the neckline and the material on the bodice (which only looks slightly different… I think the one in the movie is some kind of lace or something… the original has tulle) ! As for adding the bobbinette… the original is just as large/poofy… it stands up by itself and is almost impossible to fit into a changeroom! If you are interested, the price tag wasn’t bad… it was in the $7,000-$8,000 area, I can’t remember the exact cost as I did not pay for it myself. Not too bad for a Vera Wang ballgown! I’m pretty sure a lot of upscale bridal boutiques carry it…the lady who sold me mine said its a very popular dress, and this was before the movie came out! Def look into it if you love Kate’s dress because I’m telling you, it looks exactly the same! I’m from Canada, and if I can find it here, you can find it in your nearest metropolitan city I’m sure! Treat yourself, it’s your wedding day!!!!!!!

I am definitely considering selling it afterwards! The wedding is Sept 18, 2009… I also have another Vera gown that I will be selling at that time that is my “reception” dress… as the tulle number can’t be bustled and it is incredibly difficult to walk/navigate/dance in!

The only info I have on hand is a handwritten note from the owner of the salon with “Vera Wang Tulle Ballgown #12615″… I think she wrote this after my first consultation so that when I came back, she’d know which dress I’d tried on… maybe that’s the style number?

I have this dress in a size 10 (dress runs small) that I purchased brand new and am trying to sell as my venue has changed. It’s never been altered/worn for a wedding, was ordered brand new and only tried on. I paid 5,000 selling for 3,000. Let me know if anyone’s interested. It’s white and comes with a white sash.
