Piyo gear

On Wednesday night my friend, Kelly, and I put on our brave faces as we entered the yoga studio for a piyo class — a combination between yoga and pilates. My sister’s studio calls it yogalates but I am not entirely sure if it is the same thing.

Stella McCartney Yoga gear

No, this is not me. It’s not even close to being me because I was like the smelly kid in the class that the teacher had to come over and fix all of the time by straightening my legs, moving my arms, pushing my butt down etc. Since the Olympians this year had new swimsuits that supposedly made them faster, I’m hoping that some new piyo gear will make me miraculously more flexible before my next class.

Stella McCartney has a yoga collection (above) that is sold through Adidas. Those leg warmers are fun but a tad too advanced for me. The collection is athletic yet feminine, inspired by dance and ballet uniforms.
Old Navy Yoga
Old Navy’s yoga gear is very youthful and fun with graphic jackets and camis. No muted colors in their yoga studio. Yoga pants are just under $20. I think I can manage that.

J Crew Yoga

J Crew has a whole section on their site that’s dedicated to yoga gear that can be ordered online or through their catalog. What I like about their collection are all of the accessories, particularly the sour striped yoga bag that has a mesh compartment for your sweaty post-workout gear and straps to hold your mat.

I need to learn to relax at the end of the class when the instructor turns off the lights. The goal is to force all of the thoughts out of your mind so that you are in a state of calmness. My sister can do this fairly easily and enjoys resting eye pillows over her eyes. Home Grown Pillows, and Etsy seller, has a variety of eye pillows filled with flaxseed and lavendar. And many of her pillows come in Amy Butler fabrics. I love the calming smell of lavendar…

Enjoy your weekend! Perhaps you could try a piyo or yogalates class in your area. I have found that it’s a little faster paced and more fluid than the traditional yoga class, which suits me just fine. I was a little intimidated to try yoga and pilates but the instructor said to us, “this hour is all about you and no one else.” So even if I cannot bend or stretch that far, it feels good anyway and I know I’m getting somewhere.
