Project Runway: Finale at Bryant Park

October 16th, 2008 · 18 Comments

SPOILER ALERT: I cannot contain my excitement about the winner. So if you haven’t watched the Project Runway Season 5 Finale yet, load up your TiVo NOW.

What a show! The Project Runway finale at Bryant Park was brilliant in every aspect. From Kenley’s Alice in Wonderland garments, to Korto’s African inspired pieces, then finally Leanne’s aqua wave collection that shut it down (Rachel Zoe has already rubbed off on me — did you see her with Christian in the crowd?), these designers truly created very cohesive collections. Let’s talk about the collections, from my least favorite to Leanne’s winning waves…

Kenley's collection at Fashion Week

Clearly Kenley needs to keep up to speed with the major players in the fashion industry unless we believe that great minds think alike. Even though she received criticism for supposedly copying Balenciaga, I did love her hand painted fabric technique. It was very charming, youthful, and showed her distinct point of view. But as Tim pointed out, her silhouettes were a little stiff as they walked down the runway and I believe not quite up to par with Korto and Leanne’s garments.

Korto's collection at Fashion Week

As soon as the model wearing Korto’s turquoise full-length dress peeped out from backstage, I knew we were in for a good show. Full of spirit and a color palette that just brings a smile to your face, Korto’s collection proved to be very cohesive and inspired by her African heritage. I admire her attitude, love for her family, and passion for design, which all came through in her collection. Her beadwork was impressive (as a jewelry designer I was particularly interested in this aspect) and of the three designers, I would actually wear Korto’s garments first including the white high-waisted pants with the gold piping down the side. Loved it.

Leanne's winning collection at Fashion Week

But now Leanne just knocked it out of the park with her waves that really seemed to flow down the runway. Her craftsmanship was impeccable and Leanne surprisingly showed us a lot of versatility by designing pants, skirts, vests, jackets, and dresses. I’m not a fashion expert but I believe Leanne brought something new to the white tents at Bryant Park. I’m just in awe of Leanne.

Leanne is the winner of Project Runway

Leanne is the winner of Project Runway! Her signature piece is now up for auction with the current bid at $500. If you would like to bid on any of the garments from the finale, you can do so right here. The garments are designed for women size 0-2 and 5′10″ to 6′2″ tall. I’ve got the height covered but will have to pull a Forrest Gump and run non-stop to squeeze into them :)

Hope you enjoyed this season! When does the next season start?

I’m so happy Leanne won, especially as the judges acknowledged and supported her very non-drab use of sustainable materials. The collection was amazing, and I’m completely rooting for the Etsy Girl Gone Big-Time and what she’ll be bringing to the table in the future.

I enjoyed the whole season, and also look forward to the series premier on Lifetime, whenever that may be.

I, too, loved this season’s finale and a BIG thumbs up for having an all-girl showing. I loved Korto’s collection and would wear it hands down. I could see anyone of any culture wearing these clothes. Throughout the season she had shown consistently her fabulous workmanship and style. And although I also liked Leanne’s collection, I thought her waves were a bit over-the-top. I agree with you that she brought the most all-around wear from shorts to pants to dresses to evening gowns, which to me showed more versitility than either Korto or Kenley’s did. She deserved her big win!

Jude — go Etsy girl! As soon as Leanne mentioned that she is used a lot of sustainable materials then I knew she had it in the bag.

CaLee — (pretty name, by the way) Leanne’s collection seemed like wave after wave but what surprised me the most was how flowing and soft it was compared to her more rigid and structured pieces earlier in the season.

And I completely forgot to mention how DISAPPOINTED I was that Jennifer Lopez didn’t make it as a guest judge because of a foot injury. That’s bogus! She wouldn’t have to stand up for any of the show.

It was awesome!! I thought it was a close call between Leanne and Korto’s collections. Leanne showed her talent week after week. It was a fun season and the all girl finale made it that much more interesting! Can’t wait for the next one…

i’m glad leanne won! her collection was so innovative and couture-like. the soft color palette was unusual and beautiful. i love korto’s collection, too. the colors just popped and her pieces are sophisticated and wearable. i really like kenley’s hand painted fabrics (i would wear that cream dress in a heart beat), but she has a lot to learn. thank you for the wonderful wrap up as i didn’t get to watch it, yet!
