Ike in Australia

Houston

Well, not quite. But it sure has been a whirlwind the past 10 days. As you have probably heard, Hurricane Ike ended up being a much bigger deal than everyone expected. We are very thankful that we escaped any major damage (just a few missing shingles) but feel for those who lost their homes and loved ones. After being cooped up in our house without power for a couple of days, Jon and I ventured out to see if we could find some hot food because our peanut butter sandwiches just weren’t cutting it any longer. We couldn’t believe the damage that our neighborhood sustained even though we’re quite far from the coastline.

Our power was finally restored on Tuesday night. I don’t think I have ever been so excited to turn on a light switch! But during those four days of darkness, we actually enjoyed our time because it gave me and my husband a chance just to sit and chat for hours and hours. Jon was getting a little antsy on Sunday when he realized he was missing all of his football games but other than that it was just a good time to reconnect. Perhaps a power outage here and there isn’t a bad thing :) . I learned how to play poker, that we own a boatload of candles (the house smelled really good), and that our dog, Aura, cannot eat in the dark because her food was all over the kitchen floor the next morning.

But as soon as the power was restored, I had to pack my bags for a surprise trip home to Australia. I’m in Sydney right now celebrating my cousin’s 21st birthday (Rafe pictured above) — James Bond style — plus spending as much time with my grandmother and family as possible. My sister and her husband also just returned from an 18-month trip around the world so we have of a lot to catch-up on. I’ll resume regular posting next week in Houston (with many Sydney pics) but I just wanted to check-in with you to let you know that I’m thinking of you and thank you for all of the lovely e-mails and comments. It brought a smile to my face when I opened up my inbox :)

I’ll be back soon…
