Project Runway: Zodiac avant-garde challenge

September 11th, 2008 · 14 Comments

This week our Project Runwayers had to create an avant-garde look based on a team member’s Zodiac sign. And who were the teammates? The eight eliminated designers from this season. Oh, the drama…

Jerell's winning avant-garde garment on Project Runway

We all ooohed over boring Joe’s Aries dress but according to the great Mr. Tim Gunn, Daniel was the lead designer. I didn’t think Joe could do that all on his own. But good for him — the voluminous ruffles and feminine bolero were enough to pass Joe through to the next round. Leanne’s Scorpio sculptural dress should have won, don’t you think? The whole idea of the avant-garde challenge is to show the judges something that they would never have seen on the runway and I believe Leanne’s innovative approach with the swooping claw-like head cover was truly something different. Instead Houston-boy Jerell was the winner. The subtle use of seven different types of trim and daring selection of fabric seemed to impress the judges.

Blayne and Terri's losing avant-garde garment on Project Runway

Double whammy — Blayne and Terri are out. What happened to my girl, Terri? I didn’t think she deserved to be kicked off last night because her gold Leo number wasn’t that bad. Blayne’s jumpsuit was atrocious (yes, pooping fabric) and it was definitely time for “licious” to go. Kenley’s developing attitude, not to mention her Minnie Mouse dress, are scoring fewer and fewer points in my book each week.

Christian and Heidi on Project RunwayWhat a surprise to see the previous Project Runway designers as judges this week. I’m glad “fierce” Christian and the gorgeous Allison Kelly were amongst the returnees. Who were your favorites this week? Are you shocked about Terri’s departure?
