The beauty of White Forest Pottery

Tea cups from White Forest PotteryWe’re blessed to have our Mum here with us for two weeks while she visits from Australia. I’m very close to her — more like friends than a mother and daughter as I can tell her anything and she is there for me during my highs and lows. It was her birthday recently so we knew we had to get her something very special.

A few months ago I posted about the work of Nancy Bauch from White Forest Pottery and I had no doubt that the organic forms would appeal to Mum. Each piece is handmade and reflects the philosophy of “wabi sabi,” an aesthetic that honors the beauty of imperfection. And Mum’s set of tea cups is nothing but beautiful, as each cup is unique from the next. I can just imagine her drinking hot tea late at night while curled up on the couch. All she’ll need is a fireplace but the sound of the rain or wind outside will do just fine.

Nancy draws her inspiration from nature and now directly works with the earth using a more sustainable process. Her work has become a form of meditation as she molds clay and waxed linen coils into bud vases, bowls, wave plates, and charming forest bells. One day I would love to visit her studio but for now I’m happy to browse her beautiful site.

Happy Birthday, Mum.
