Olympic Fashion

August 11th, 2008 · 8 Comments

When high fashion meets professional sportswear, you get this…

Designer fashion for the 2008 Olympics from Pucci, Alexander McQueen, & Givenchy

Twelve fashion designers were commissioned by Lane Crawford, the Chinese luxury retailer, to design a uniform of their favorite sport. While they’re not exactly sport-friendly and aero-dynamic, these garments sure are beautiful. Perhaps a little on the fantasy side too like our Project Runwayers showed us last week. ‘‘The Collective: Synergy in Fashion’’ will be on display at Lane Crawford’s Beijing store and will be auctioned off after the conclusion of the Olympics (read more about the exhibition here — photography by Chad Pitman).

2008 Opening Ceremony Olympic Fashion

So, the big question is, what did you think of the “real” Olympic opening ceremony outfits? I actually missed the opening ceremony because I was out with these lovely blogging ladies: Paloma of La Dolce Vita, Paige of I Heart You, and Lauren of Material Girls (all just as fabulous as you would imagine). I heard the styles were a little boring but the actual ceremony was AMAZING. I hoped you would all give me the scoop. Can you please fill me in?

i normally love the canadian outfits {i’m canadian :O) } but this year wasn’t impressed. normally Roots outfits our athletes for the ceremony but i don’t think these were designed by Roots at all. i thought the US looked pretty dapper. very classic and very ralph lauren - who i think was the designer of the outfits. i wasn’t paying too much attention to fashion as i was the number of athletes each country sent and the ceremony itself :o)

I’ve been watching the games on and off, and unfortunately missed the opening ceremony! :( I love that you’ve posted this. I really like the Pucci and Martin Margiela designs.

I liked the RL designed American team outfits a lot. Classic, and the hats were great. I thought the Americans were the best dressed. One of the teams, maybe New Zealand, had chenogsam inspired tunics on the ladies. I thought they were pretty and that it was neat that they honored the location of the games like that. Other than that, pretty blech. Re: the canadian commenter above, I too was really surprised at the Canadian outfits. Very boring, and they’ve done better in the past.

Hi Kylie, it was so nice to meet you! I did catch {some} of the Opening Ceremony, so I saw most of the outfits. I liked the American ensemble but I wish the girls were in something a little more feminine.

Krissy, I just you-tubed some of it. Absolutely incredible! So far I’ve probably liked the US outfits the most but need to see these tunics that Jen talked about. The Olympics have been so much fun to watch! I didn’t watch much of the Athens games but I’m glued to the tv this year.
