Project Runway: Night Out in New York

July 31st, 2008 · 6 Comments

Was anyone else a tad underwhelmed last night? The reason was not the challenge. This week our Project Runwayers were asked to create a garment inspired by a night out on the town in New York City. Basically the designers had free reign to do anything, shopped at Mood themselves, and were given a reasonable budget of $100. What more could you want?

Kenley's winning New York City garment on Project Runway

At least I’m happy with the winner, Kenley. I’ve never seen tulle work in a voluminous but tamed way and the result was quite unexpected. The color palette reminds me of the upholstery on outdoor furniture back in my grandmother’s era. Kenley would wear it out, but would you? Terri’s backless street-inspired garment was striking and just needed a dramatic pair of earrings to complete the look. Loved the free-flowing fabric in shades of blue, yellow and black that signified the look of graffiti on the walls. And Leanne’s architectural skirt deserved to be in the top 3. Her interpretation was strong and executed perfectly. If Heidi will wear it, then sign me up.

Emily's losing New York City garment on Project Runway

Emily was the loser on Project Runway this week but her dress wasn’t awful. It was just at the bottom of the sea of very mediocre garments. I would have been fine if they decided to cut five people last night since there are way too many to keep track of right now. Emily’s design is meant to represent the movement of streaks of light but the connection was lacking between the dress and ruffles, which appeared to be two distinct and detached elements. Perhaps she should have taken cues from the Elle cover of Jessica Alba behind her.

Korto's New York City garment on Project Runway

Friends, Kelly & Simone, loved Korto’s jumpsuit because it was elegant and very New York. It reminds me of a garment that Laura Bennett from Season 3 would have designed, without the plunging neckline.

If we could skip ahead to the last 6 episodes, who would you like to still see there? Do you have a feel for everyone’s styles yet? Were you underwhelmed last night?

i would have loved to see terri’s dress completely backless. i loved kenley’s, and i would hope i could pull it off; you can tell you’d have fun with that dress. i really love korto’s work. she always sends off quality pieces, whether you like it or not. with emily’s inspiration of the city’s streaming lights, i would have liked to see something with more flowing fabric, with interweaving colors — like a long, flowing, light dress. And leanne’s was perfect.

Ahh, I don’t watch the show, so I love hearing your updates! Thanks, dear Kylie! :)

I’m pulling for Terri and Kenley, for their designs and attitudes. Jessie, your suggestion for Emily’s dress sounds so appropriate for her inspiration photo.

Korto & Terri are the only two I like…. we can just whittle it down to those two and I”ll be happy :)

i liked korto’s jumpsuit a lot, and i like her vibe in general. i feel the same way about kenley, too…she seems to be thinking in her own creative bubble and i always look forward to what she will design. and i love michael kors’ commentary…what was keith’s dress, “toilet paper in a wind tunnel”?!

I’m a little late in responding to this, especially with the next episode tomorrow night! I did like Kenley’s dress, although I could never get away with wearing it, but was actually a little surprised she won because of the comments about it being out of the ’80s. I was glad Leanne had a good showing, and Terri and Korto are two I’m watching as well. Until tomorrow!
