Project Runway: Grocery store challenge

July 16th, 2008 · 11 Comments

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched the season premiere yet, please program your TiVo now.

And so Season 5 of Project Runway begins…

As I mentioned several times, Project Runway is definitely my number one show. My husband painlessly surrenders the remote to me since he is equally impressed by what these designers can create out of nothing. And for the first episode of Season 5, that “nothing” was whatever the designers chose at Gristedes, a grocery store chain in Manhattan. Most opted for tablecloths and a few ventured out with their creativity. So who am I keeping a close eye on during this season?

Project Runway Gristedes grocery store challenge

Wesley. Kenley. Daniel. Any guy who can get away with wearing tailored shorts and loafers probably has some style and Wesley seemed to bring a little of his Marc Jacobs background into his yellow fly swat dress. Kenley’s self-proclaimed “loud view” definitely intrigues me, especially the way she combined colors and patterns. Her coral and turquoise combination scored double points in my book. Finally, Daniel’s innovative approach to this challenge makes me wonder if he will be the next Jillian Lewis from season 4. Plastic cups instead of red licorice?

Kelli was the winner of this challenge but I’m not sure if I agree 100%. The judges claimed the dress was innovative and they could imagine girls wearing it. I’ll give her credit for staining vacuum cleaner bags but I know I wouldn’t be comfortable with two circle patches on my chest. Jerry was the loser this week and I think we all saw that one coming with his tent-like raincoat, neon gloves, and chunky white boots. The pattern on Project Runway shows that anyone who talks a big game up front seems to lose early.

Since I enjoyed discussing the episodes with you all last season (Alia included!), I have decided to keep this a regular feature on Bandelle.

  • Who are your favorites?
  • What challenges would you like to see this season?
  • Who would make the ultimate guest judge?

PSAnd Bravo, can you please post the source of Heidi’s dresses each week? You know we love them.

hi kylie - found your blog through a friend’s and i’ll have to say that i’m with you on the winner of this one…i was not overly impressed with the coffee filter “top”. i liked kenley’s the best. the shape of that piece is beautiful. As far as judges go, it’d be hard to beat Posh! Maybe Katie Holmes and Suri?!

    Hi Kylie!
I don’t watch this show, but Jude mentioned there’s a girl on it who has an Etsy shop. You know, I hope she wins, whoever she is, just for that reason :)

My favorite is Kenleys! What a breathtaking use of colors! And I would wear it!! (After some excersise ;-)) This season has not yet started over here, but now I know I’m in for some treats!!
Thank you for giving me a sneak peek ;-)!!
The ultimate guest judge for me would have to be Sophia Lauren..hihi…who could have guessed ;-)!!

Kenley was one of my favorites as well. i think we have a good season upon us (i just wish they didn’t redo the first challenge — oh, well) great idea to keep the feature! :)

Yea! I’m so glad this will be a weely feature! Project Runway is definitely one of my favorite shows as well. It seems we have the same favorites. Poor Daniel! He looked so disappointed when he didn’t win. While I thought Kelli’s skirt was innovative and sort of pretty, you’re right about the top, It’s not wearable at all and it just looked like two doilies, which is exactly what it was. How cute is Kenley? I love her look. Did you know Jerrell is originally from Houston? I can’t stand that Blayne guy with his stupid “girlicious”. It’s obvious he made up the stupid catch phrase because he wants to be like Christian with his “fierce”. Well Blayne, Christian called and asked me to give you a message: “You’re a hot tranny mess!”.

I wish you were going to night so we could talk about this some more!

Paloma — your comment made me LOL. That’s just way too funny. I guess you and Jon are on the same wavelength about Blayne and his “girlicious.” Wish I could come tonight too.
Alston — Katie Holmes and Suri would be adorable. I think Suri is the cutest celebrity baby to date.
Krissy — I hope Kenley has the Etsy shop!
    Monica — ahhh…Sophia, Sophia…
Jessie — there is just something about Kenley that intrigues me. Plus I liked her portfolio that got her on the show.
Paige — your recaps will be such great entertainment!
And DFM - oh, you know I missed you too!

Someone I’m watching is Leanne, because I have loved seeing the fashions in her Etsy shop. It was actually kind of fun to see her and then think, “Wait! I know her!” Not really, but the familiarity was nice. But now I don’t even remember her design so that can’t be a good sign!

I read this was the final season. ????

I totally forgot to watch the first episode last week. So I just caught up this evening. I am also a fan of Kenley…I thought her dress would have made it in the top! And YOU KNOW I am all about the turquoise! And it was very wearable!

I really liked Terri’s mop sweater…I thought it was pretty creative! And I liked Kelli’s dress with all the lovely textures…but then when I read your post I realized if you are bigger than an A cup bra…you can’t wear those two circles!

I have my eye on Korto! I loved her yellow dress with the veggies! That called my name other than Kenleys….and for some reason I thought Joe with the pasta skirt etc would have won. I thought it was innovative how he created a pattern from the materials ont he skirt…then mixed it up with the pattern on the top! I loved it! Soooooo I have my eye on 4 people:

    Kenley
    Kelli
    Korto
    Joe

I want a girl to win for once now too!

P.S. I’m all about Shear Genius since last season! I love that show! Thank God for Wednesday night line up!

OH! Two people should have gone home!!! The guy who made the hospital outfit and the chick with the garbage bags! They both needed to go home!
