Picnic Lovin’

April 24th, 2008 · 5 Comments

It has been such a treat this week because my sister and brother-in-law are visiting from Australia. They are getting used to the mild Houston heat but Melissa commented on how we just don’t see many people go on picnics. Part of the reason is that we all don’t dare go outside in the summer because the humidity here is unbearable. But I think we could take advantage of the 80 degree weather now so Melissa helped me pick out some items — a few of which we bought for our mum. She’s the original picnic lover in our family who would take us on picnics in Sydney at least 2-3 times during the summer…

Picnic items

(Clockwise from left: table in a bag from Crate & Barrel, sommar placemats from IKEA, tweats melamine plate set from Velocity Art + Design, director oak chair from Picnic Fun, striped picnic blanket from Crate & Barrel, sommar tea light lantern from IKEA, and the avalanche cooler on wheels from Cooking.com)

Some of us are turned off by picnics because it seems like such a hassle to pack your car then lug everything to the park. BUT, take it from the Aussie, a cooler on wheels makes all the difference. This is Melissa’s number #1 picnic essential and the new designs are closing the gap between the pretty picnic baskets. Here are some other items on her list:

  • If your bag on wheels doesn’t come with reusable plastic plates, grab some patterned melamine sets to add to the picnic fun.
  • Find a blanket with a protective coating on the bottom to prevent grass stains and dirt build up.
  • Light some citronella candles to keep the bugs away.
  • Set up a little table for all of your snacks and goodies.
  • And for extra comfort (especially for the men), bring a couple of folding chairs.

To top it off, if you are looking for some yummy food (since that’s most important) the Food Network has some great picnic recipes and extra tips. Enjoy!

sigh…I can’t wait for picnic season to start here. I would be a little soggy right now. I am the old fashioned picnic basket kind of gal. Your choices are wonderful!

Beautiful! I love a picnic, but the weather here is so unstable I must admit to not doing it as often as I want to ;-) So nice to have your family over ;-) Enjoy their visit! :-)
