Sew, Mama, Sew!

I think it might be time for me to learn how to sew. I keep seeing all of these great DIY projects that often involve whipping out the sewing machine. Since I enjoy working with my hands, I couldn’t be too terrible at sewing, right? And to my surprise, the lovely Nan from Amy Butler’s team (thank you) sent me some interesting patterns that I’m eager to give a shot — lotus tunic, kimberley bag, and the gum drop pillows.

Somehow I stumbled upon a great blog (and store) called Sew, Mama, Sew. It’s jam-packed full of fun and useful DIY projects that they have compiled from in-house and other great designers. Here are some of my favorites, which are gift-friendly too:

DIY Projects from Sew Mama Sew

Clockwise from left: wellness bag (perfect for de-stressing), oil cloth lunch bag (best lunch bag I’ve ever seen) from Tumbling Blocks, tiny pin cushions from How About Orange, book covers from Moonstitches, and apron sets from Mama Blue Knitting Goods.

My big question — what kind of sewing machine is great for a beginner? I can’t see myself ever needing to do anything too elaborate so I would just need a basic but reliable sewing machine. Sew, Mama, Sew has a great selection of fabrics so I think I’m covered there. Depending on how you look at it, this might be dangerous because I could see myself getting a fabric addiction. Let me know if you ever try out any of the DIY projects. I want to see!
