Summer: Orla Kiely & IKEA

March 13th, 2008 · 10 Comments

Is it really time to start talking about summer? I haven’t even finished planting my spring garden yet. I’m a “late bloomer” and definitely don’t have a green thumb. But I try and it makes me happy to be outside getting my hands all dirty. I planted some ivy over the weekend (would love to create the look of one of those gorgeous brownstones in the northeast) so we’ll see how long it lives. But enough about that…

Orla Kiely’s summer collection (right) just puts a smile on my face. I love the playful use of color and graphic patterns. Her summer dresses have that innocent flirtatiousness. They make me want to slip one on and meet the girls for a drink at Balmoral Beach, one of Sydney’s most beautiful spots. Don’t you just love the photography? Take a moment to browse Orla Kiely’s site — she has a great and cheery collection of homewares, dresses, and overnight bags.

Summer: Orla Kiely & IKEA collections

IKEA sent over a brochure about their “Summer designed by IKEA” line yesterday. The first photo actually reminds me of how my Mum used to set-up a little picnic for us outside in our yard when we were kids, complete with cushions, umbrellas, and a little table for our drinks. We would play and run around in the sprinkler whenever the dry Sydney heat was too much for us. It used to be one of my favorite parts of the summer. Do you have fun summer stories to share?

These seasonal products just arrived in IKEA stores (left), so let’s plan out our patios with major pops of color before they run out. Designers Lisel Garsveden and Maria Vinka were inspired by, “the African culture, where they dare to go all out and explode with colors and patterns.” And you can see that mixed with a Scandinavian influence in their GRENO cushions. Jon Karlsson even brought that same warmth to his VADERO outdoor furniture designs, giving you a comfy place to sit outside while admiring your beautiful and thriving garden :)
