The love letter

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Since historically this is the day when people profess their love to one another, I thought we’d talk about the old-fashioned love letter. It’s a lost art. Those words on paper that just make your heart ache have been replaced by emails and text messages. While I am just as addicted to email as the guy next door, I kind of miss the excitement of running to my mailbox each day to see if anyone has sent a letter to me. I’ve decided that I am going to bring back letter writing amongst my family and friends. But we’ll all need to re-stock our stationery drawers.

I found some creative ways to send your love letters on Lovingyou.com: (a) send your loved one on a letter hunt by giving him or her clues to find it in a special place; (b) draw a bubble bath and float a letter in a bottle; and (c) write a letter on the back of a jigsaw puzzle and let him or her put it back together. If you want to follow the traditional 18th century form of letter writing, use a quill to handwrite your letter on special parchment paper. Then seal your letter with wax and finish it off with ribbon. Presentation was just as important as the content.

So get yourself a wax sealing kit and follow these quick instructions:

Love letter seal1. Light the wick and hold it down towards your paper at a 20 degree angle

2. Allow it to drip on the area where you wish to seal your letter

3. Then remove the wax and emboss with your decorative stamp (shown — wax seal stamp from broadwayartsalvage on Etsy)

Otherwise, if you don’t have time to do this for your loved one and you live in the San Francisco area, run over to Miette and grab a few delicious cupcakes. It will make your loved one almost as happy.
