Project Runway: Avant-garde challenge

Kit, what happened?

Project Runway: Kit's avant-garde losing garments

Now here’s a designer that I expected to see more from. I earmarked Kit in the first episode because I thought by the end of the season she would “wow” us. But for this Project Runway avant-garde challenge, Kit was the loser. Our Runwayers had to create an over the top conceptual avant-garde garment with a corresponding ready-to-wear piece. And these two designs had to be inspired by their model’s hairstyles.

Kit teamed up with Ricky this week and it wasn’t a match made in heaven. Oh, the fabrics. They were more like Laura Ashley circa 1980. Unfortunately the layers upon layers of it only made the avant-garde garment look even more old-fashioned, not high fashion. Since Kit was the team leader and also responsible for the poor fabric selections our dear Ricki got to stay for another week. My Project Runway obsessed friend compared the tragedy of Kit leaving to Alison Kelly’s departure in season 3. So much potential…lucky for Kit, if she follows in Alison’s footsteps she’ll have her own line very soon.

Project Runway: Chris & Christian's avant-garde winning garments

You might as well call this a Chris-and-Christian fan club post because I was simply blown away by their winning team efforts. Wowzer. I was a little skeptical about how they would work together but I should have know that Chris, with his costume design background, would create something so dramatic and Christian would tame it to an undeniable level of sophistication. There was no way that you could have missed their avant-garde garment as the model walked down the runway. With “circles” of organza, 47 feet to be exact, layered so meticulously around the skirt it was sure to impress the judges. The avant-garde look translated so beautifully into a ready-to-wear blouse and skirt, fitted through the waist. Give it to me — I’m ready to wear it. Soon we’ll be able to see it in the pages of Elle magazine.

Project Runway: Jillian & Victorya's second place looks

Jillian and Victorya were not too far behind. In fact, their punk and equestrian inspired avant-garde look was incredible. This duo designed a Matrix-style trench coat to reflect the punk hairstyle but with hints of plaid and complementary rider pants. Detailing is their specialty — did you notice the plaid on the back of the shirt? If their every day dress was a little more fresh then I would have been perfectly fine if they won the challenge. Nevertheless, I was impressed.

Project Runway: Rami & Sweet P

I think you’ll agree with me that our Project Runwayers are definitely showing their style right now. We pretty much know what to expect from Rami — a draped silhouette in some form. At the beginning of the season I was floored by his dresses. They looked so incredibly beautiful, almost goddess-like, but I think we’re starting to see the same thing from him every week. Hopefully Christian won’t fall into that trap but I’m not worried quite yet. Rami, on the other hand, learned his lesson this week by taking his place in the bottom two. But Rami, we have faith in you. You’ll work it out. Thank goodness Sweet P was around to save you.

That’s it for this week. I wonder what’s behind those garage doors in the next episode. Can Wednesday come any sooner?

I loved the back of Kit’s Avent Garde design but I can’t find a picture of it anywhere. If you have one please post it.

Abby, unfortunately I don’t have a photo of the back of Kit’s dress. Sorry I cannot help you. I wished we had time to see more from Kit because I thought she was a very talented designer. Oh well, hopefully she’ll launch a clothing line soon.
