Project Runway: Prom Queens

January 10th, 2008 · 10 Comments

Designing a dress for the prom, “one of the most important days in a woman’s life” (Heidi Klum), was the task this week and there were a few nightmares in the Parsons studio.

Clearly I must need glasses because there is no way that weeping Ricky should not have been booted off Project Runway last night. My Aussie friends, who I made watch Project Runway with me during their visit, were yelling at the tv just like my husband does during his beloved Penn State football games.  Ricky’s pale pink bubble dress was lifeless and uninspiring. The color did absolutely nothing for this girl. Sears, have you put in your order?

Kevin's prom dress on Project Runway I’m sad that Kevin was the loser this week.  Although his red halter dress was made out of cheap looking fabric, cropped a little too short, and had some hemming issues, it was not his turn to kiss Heidi good-bye. Hopefully we’ll see this former jean designer’s line in stores one day.

The prom dress task was a challenge for some Project Runway-ers but there were a couple of winners in my eyes. Victorya’s age-appropriate dress was adorable on this prom queen. Not a huge fan of the crystal detail but the color popped, red styling shoes gave it an edge, and the young model bounced as she walked down the runway.

And my-oh-my did Sweet P surprise me. If you recall in “It’s Runway time: Hershey’s challenge”, I was ready to see her go but this prom dress was glamorous and had some pizazz. Nina Garcia thought it was a little too sophisticated for a seventeen year old but I dug up a very old photo of my prom dress in Sydney. Perhaps Sweet P was the muse behind my Australian designer.
